Although virtually similar in a number of ways to regular colleges in their emphasis on academic freedom, and academic and athletic performance, Christian Colleges also focus on the spiritual development of their students.

Admissions also take into consideration the spiritual outlook and maturity of applicants. Understandably, virtually the entire student body of Christian Colleges is made up of students who identify themselves as Christians.

The Bible and Christianity form the core of academia in Christian Colleges. The faculty too subscribes to the Christian values that their employers seek to impart.

Not all Christian Colleges are alike however. While one college may call itself proudly Catholic or Protestant, another college may be nondenominational in outlook.

A good number of Christian Colleges began life as modest institutions founded by active Christians to uplift the illiterate and the impoverished.

The core curriculum of Christian Colleges explores subjects such as the liberal arts and sciences from the point of view of the Christian. The curriculum aims to both impart knowledge about academic subjects, and help in the spiritual development of students at the same time.

In other words, while students prepare themselves for life after college they also learn the importance of assuming responsibility for their own behavior and leading a Christian life regardless of what their vocation in life may turn out to be. Students are taught that they have a bigger responsibility as Christians to give more of themselves to their communities and the world at large regardless of whether they choose to become entrepreneurs, employees, or religious leaders.

Christian Colleges also accept multicultural and international students.

Christian Colleges are usually affiliated with national associations such as the Christian College Consortium, and international bodies such as the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

Almost all Christian Colleges incorporate community worship in campus life. Students are also encouraged to participate in ministry and outreach programs on campus, in the local communities, and even in other countries.

Christian Colleges may also have certain behavioral expectations from students. These expectations, including abstinence from cigarettes, alcoholic substances and mind-altering substances, are characteristic of any self-consciously Christian community.
